According to Metro Vancouver “In Metro Vancouver, more than 3,000 residential and commercial buildings are demolished each year. A typical home demolition sends about 50 tonnes of waste to landfills. Some recyclable materials with strong markets or high disposal costs, like metals, heavy timber, gypsum drywall and concrete, are salvaged during demolition, but many usable materials get thrown out.
To increase recycling, municipalities are developing policies to encourage reuse and recycling of building materials, including adapting a Metro Vancouver sample bylaw that requires demolition waste to go to licensed solid waste facilities.”
